About Me

Hello and Welcome! I am Helen Monaghan, a psychotherapeutic counsellor and an accredited member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
The fact that you are even reading this, means that you have taken the first step to dealing with what maybe causing you concern.  Well done, it takes an act of strength to seek therapy. Now its about finding the right therapist for you, so let me say a little about myself.

I have always been fascinated by the field of Psychotherapy and Counselling. I am committed to understanding how we think and feel and thus how we relate to our world. I believe that this has a direct influence over not only what happens to us, but informs the direction of all relationships.  Knowing this is the key to building our awareness, as what goes on in our inner world directly influences our outer world.

As a member of the BACP I am governed by their ethical code of conduct and regularly engage in CPD and clinical supervision which supports best practice.

I was initially drawn to the person centred approach and completed my BACP Accredited Diploma within this line of study.  It was whilst continuing on to gain my Humanistic and Integrative Bachelors’ Degree in Counselling with Middlesex University that allowed me to practise therapy within the public sector.  I have been very fortunate to have worked alongside some very influential people within this field, which led to me being asked to appear on the famous ‘Drugs Live’ Ch4 programme with Jon Snow as a counsellor.
Through my years of experience working in private practice, I have helped many clients who have presented with issues involving relationships and family breakdowns to trauma related experiences and over the past few years, I have seen a rise in problems surrounding our professional life, where we are feeling more and more pressure to achieve.  When dealing with areas of speciality such as anxiety disorders and depression, I will often use the beneficial tools of Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Transactional Analysis (TA).
I have found that the holistic integration of my skill set has been very effective when working with my younger clients, particularly when dealing with exam stress, anxiety and pressure to be the 'good scholar'. It can be a difficult time for young people who are tying to work through the confusion of who they are and their ever changing world around them.
Here are just some of my clients life experiences that they have needed to find awareness and help with:

  • Anxiety
  • Separation & Loss
  • Depression
  • Relationship problems - family, partner, friendships
  • Bereavement
  • Life Choices & Transitions

  • Self Esteem & Confidence

  • Stress & Work Related Issues

  • Self Harm

  • Addiction

  • Abuse - Emotional, Mental, Physical

  • Trauma

You can skype, email or call me on my mobile for an initial, no obligation chat prior to booking your first session.  If I am unable to answer, please leave a message with your name, telephone number and a convenient time for us to talk - I will return your call within 24 hours.
